Tandem Bikes for those not in Tandem

Tandem bikes can bring the two together and inculcate harmony, especially if you otherwise find it difficult to move in the same direction. Two or more bikes bolted together, designed to be driven by more than one rider, are known as tandem bike. Tandem bikes primarily focus on the seating arrangement. Tandem bikes are used more popularly by blind or physically impaired, though on a lighter note, couples who fail to keep up the coordination benefit from this bike design. Thus if you want to ride together, but have varying riding abilities, checking out the tandem bike rental and thus giving this cycle design a try, might suffice. Alternatively, tandem bikes are also a challenge for two equally skilled riders.

The Tandem Bike Types

In addition to the basic double seat tandem bike, there are variations. For instance multi seated tandem bikes, are available. These can be more occasionally seen during the various cycling championships, where there are tandem cycling competitions. Multi riders together participate and the coordination between all serves as the most important winning yardstick.

There are also tandem bike designs, where independent pedalling is an option. The rider could be in front or rear. Folding bikes are also an option in this category. The tandem folding bikes can be packed and taken to wherever you would like to cycle.

The Front Rider’s Role

Most typically, unless the design offers stated or any related variations, the front rider of the tandem bike is entrusted with the task of managing the steering and brakes. This logically implies that the rider, usually the front seat driver, is to exercise caution and avoid path holes, vehicles or any other obstruction on the way. The same also highlights the relevance of skilled driver, handling the steer and brake responsibilities.

The partner (rear rider) on the other hand, pedals and tries maintaining the sync. In the racing competitions, the partner is expected to act as a navigator, while the front rider follows the instructions. It is thus a combined responsibility of the two, to manage safe cycling.

Points to Remember

  •  The front rider or captain should be adequately experienced. If you get bored by just pedalling and looking around, but are not a confident cyclist, do not swap positions, just for the fun of it. Trading can be nice, especially because it helps you understand each other’s roles, but be cautious, as it can be risky too. However, while buying tandem bikes or checking tandem bike rental, you would like to select the one which is comfortable for the captain to manage. So if you plan to switch often, it’ll be important to check suitability for both partners.

  • The stoker or the rear partner is not controlling the bike, and thus should have more energy than the captain for other purposes. But what are these other purposes. Other purposes here imply tasks like navigating, providing extra power, in case of uphill, supplying more energy during the start up, etc.

  • While checking out the tandem bikes, be careful on the frame aspect. It should fit both the partners. If any compromises must be made, the rear rider should accommodate, coz the captain has too many responsibilities for compromises.

  • You might have cycled in a standing up position while riding alone, but with tandem bikes try standing only if you get good with it. As beginners, do not even try it. Standing on tandem bikes requires increased coordination from both the partners, which is not an easy task and definitely not to be tried without helmets and other safety accessories.
